The Eugenides Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation with a mission to enhance the scientific, technological and technical education of the Greek youth. It was established in 1956, in accordance with the provisions of the will left by national benefactor Eugene Eugenides. Sixty years after the Eugenides Foundation was established, this vision has become reality. In a learning environment built to the highest standards, the Eugenides Foundation welcomes the future through a number of educational and recreational activities with a view to promoting and disseminating science and technology to the Greek people. Nowadays, the Eugenides Foundation is an internationally acknowledged technological and educational multi-center.
It hosts one of the largest and best Planetariums in the world, with the ability to display large 15/70 IMAX screen films, the new Science and Technology Center, which spans 3 floors and includes 57 interactive exhibits and specially equipped workshops, experiment displays and speeches, as well as the Technology Laboratory “UTech Lab”. It provides modern conference rooms for hosting conferences and events. Last but not least, the EF has a substantial research and development (R&D) activity through its participation as coordinator or partner in a number of projects co-funded by European Union under science, technology and maritime education. The EF maintains a wide and vibrant network of collaborating research institutions, scientists and experts in the field of science, technology and maritime education, both in Greece and abroad.
Founded in 1836, NTUA is the first institution in Greece and the 113th in the world in the field of engineering schools. With a royal decree “on education in architecture”, a Technical School was established, which initially operated only on Sundays and public holidays, offering courses to those who wish to be educated as architects in architecture. The influx of prospective students was so great that in the spring of 1840 a school of continuous (daily) operation was added in parallel with the Sunday school, while the lessons were increasing and expanding. Then the “National Technical University of Athens” is installed in its own building on Piraeus Street. In 1871 the premises of the National Technical University of Athens were moved to new buildings on Patission Street. Today, the National Technical University of Athens continues to pioneer in the field of education and in fact the collaborating school of Shipbuilding Mechanical Engineers is active in the field of education and research in the study, design and construction of vessels, marine and maritime transport technology, study mechanical installations and the maritime economy.
The University of West Attica was founded in March 2018 by the National Law no 4521. The newly established University came through the process of merging the Technological Educational Institute of Athens and Piraeus University of Applied Sciences. The Department of Naval Architecture of the University of West Attica belongs to the School of Engineering and emerged from the evolution of the Department of Naval Architecture of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, which started its academic operation in 1984. The mission of the Department of Naval Architecture is to provide high quality studies in modern shipbuilding science and technology, including methods for the design, study and construction of ships, floating structures and their electromechanical systems. Students acquire practical skills and the necessary knowledge for their professional success in a global working environment.
GMT is a new and dynamic company founded in 2016 with the aim of promoting sustainable development in the shipping sector. It is committed to promoting sustainable solutions through new technologies, consulting services and project management. He has extensive experience in 3D shipping and shipbuilding. It provides marine engineering and maritime architecture services, focusing on new technologies and innovative solutions in the shipping industry. It offers consulting services and project management services, with the aim of improving the environmental performance of shipping companies, while reducing operating costs.
The Laboratory in Research in Shipping and Port Management (ReShip) of the Department of Shipping and Business Services of the University of the Aegean was established in 2009 and is based in Chios. The laboratory has been operating since 2005, developing activities at research and teaching level. The objectives of ReShip include research in the maritime and port sectors, the development of methodology and infrastructure to explore various aspects of these markets, the exploration of the social dimensions associated with maritime transport systems, the design study, the uses and implications of maritime transport and the interaction of maritime transport systems with institutional frameworks and the social groups involved, research on the effects of the development of ship management technology and ship and cargo management on land, study of the role of human resources and the coverage of the teaching and research needs of the Department of Shipping and Business Services.
The Mediterranean Studies Institute (IMS), based in Rethymno, Crete, was founded in 1985 and is one of the eight institutes of the Institute of Technology & Research (FORTH), the most notable research center in Greece. It aims to promote research in the Humanities and social sciences as well as the application of science and technology to cultural heritage and the environment. He has been distinguished for his research in history and culture and is the only research or university institution in the country that has been honored with four ERC Grants (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) that have ever been given to the Humanities in Greece. The research programs of IMS have as their object the history and culture of Greece and the other countries of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea in various historical periods from prehistory to modern times. To date, research has focused on three areas of research: 1) Mediterranean History, 2) Mediterranean Culture, and 3) Geoinformatics for Culture & Environment technology with ten research teams in the Institute’s fields, centers, and laboratories. IMS participates with the research team of the Center for Maritime History that researches the history of the sea and more specifically the maritime history of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea as well as their communication with the rest of the world from antiquity to the present day.
